Robertson | Breede River Valley

Robertson is a stunning rural town in the Breede River Valley region that lies in the heart of Route 62, the longest wine route in the world stretching all the way from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth. Founded in 1853, the area takes its name from a Dutch Reformed Church Minister of Scottish descent. Initially, the main industry in the region was farming and wagon building, but the latter ground to a halt after the introduction of the railway at the end of the Anglo Boer War.

Robertson then became famous for its ostrich industry, but the First World War put an end to this and farmers turned their attention to wine and fruit farming.  There are also a number of world-renowned racehorse breeding estates that have been established here, which add to the area’s prosperous economy.  Needless to say, the properties available in this part of the Breede River Winelands region are primarily farms and smallholdings aligned to an agricultural or stud purpose.

One of Robertson’s main claims to fame is the fact that it has become synonymous with the production of organic wine and there is also a variety of developing olive farm businesses that have sprung up in recent years.  The town itself is known for its tree lined avenues and well tended gardens, as well as vineyards bordered with colourful roses, red and yellow cannas, as well as bright bougainvilleas.  The homes in the Breede River region of the Western Cape are generally quaint, with a rustic rural appeal and the country lifestyle makes property here just that much more attractive.
